Dr. Klaus Maertens broke his leg during World War II and was unhappy with the military footwear that caused him pain. So he invented a new type of shoe with a soft tire sole that absorbed shock. His idea met with success and in 1947 he teamed up with the British footwear company Griggs's to create the Dr. Martens brand.
